Cycling

Cycling is a hugely popular sport that can be done
recreationally or competitively.   Through Schools or club cycling it’s a great
way to meet friends, create a team environment and learn some valuable skills
that can be applied across all aspects of your life.

There is also a number of different types of cycling so it’s
almost guaranteed you will fall in love with one of them!  There is Road Cycling, Track Cycling (in a
velodrome), BMX and Mountain Bike.

Why is it good for me?

Cycling is a great way to exercise, keep fit and active
and make some great friends!  It is low
impact – it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise.
A good muscle workout as cycling uses all of the major muscle groups
as you pedal and also cycling increases stamina, strength and aerobic
fitness.

How much will it cost me?

You will need a bike and a helmet to get going but then it’s free to get out on your bike on the road or through our forests.  If you are looking to experience some competition in cycling, we recommend you starting or joining your school cycling team (or your local club) which will give you access to events for you to train for and to other resources like coaches, mentors and cycling buddies.

What do I need to start?

Getting into the sport can be done cost effectively.  Check with your school or local club as they may have a bike you can hire while until you work out how cool cycling is!  Once you have your bike and a helmet there is no stopping you!  You can ride a bike wearing standard exercise gear and sports shoes.  As you get more involved, there is no limit including specific cycling gear and shoes that can you look into.
